Why your creative business needs more than Instagram

Let’s get straight to it; whether you’re a master with makeup brushes, a fashion styling pro, or a creative genius with gold and precious jewels. Your Instagram is hot with likes, follows, and comments. But here’s the deal: relying solely on Instagram to run your creative business is risky. It’s like building a house on sand—it looks great, but it’s not exactly stable.

Here’s why you absolutely, positively, no-doubt-about-it need your own website.

You own it, down to every tiny pixel

Instagram is like renting a flat. Sure, you can decorate it and make it feel like home, but at the end of the day, you’re at the mercy of your landlord. What happens if Instagram changes its algorithm (again) or, heaven forbid, your account gets hacked or shut down?

A website, on the other hand, is your own digital home. You control it, you own it, and no one can just take it away.

Social media is fickle & fragile

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Instagram’s algorithm. It’s a mysterious beast that can drastically affect your reach from one day to the next to the point where I have seen it result in businesses closing down entirely.

One change and suddenly your posts are getting half the engagement they used to. With a website, you’re not subject to the whims of an algorithm. Your content is always there, always accessible, and always under your control. It’s there to be discovered by everyone, not just those with an Instagram account.

Credibility and professionalism

Let’s face it, having a professional website makes you look more legit. It’s like having a beautifully designed studio compared to a table at the local village fayre. Potential clients are more likely to trust and hire someone who has taken the time to create a professional online presence. It shows you mean business (literally).

Better SEO and discoverability

Google is your friend, but only if you have a website. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a powerful tool that helps people find your business when they’re searching online. Instagram isn’t searchable in the same way. A optimised website can help you attract new clients who didn’t even know they were looking for you.

Plus, not everyone uses social media apps. Many people still rely on good ol’ Google to find what they need. By having a website, you’re ensuring that you can be discovered by everyone, not just the Instagram crowd.

Freedom to sell and scale

Thinking about selling products or booking services online? Instagram’s shopping features are limited. With your own website, you can set up an online store, take bookings, offer downloadable content, and so much more. The possibilities are endless, and you’re not limited by what Instagram decides to offer.

Ready to level up?

Relying solely on Instagram is risky. Social media platforms come and go (remember Myspace or Vine?). Algorithms change, features get updated or removed, and what works today might not work tomorrow. Your business needs a solid foundation, and that foundation is a well-designed, fully functional website.

Creating a website doesn’t have to be daunting either, if that’s what’s putting you off. It should be fun, exciting and if you work with a Designer like me, you’ll be gently guided every step of the way.

From Jewellery Designers to Stylists to Artists, I’ve worked with every corner of the creative industry but it’s the small, independent business who I adore working with the most. If you’re looking for a Designer who thrives within your industry, I would love to hear from you!
